This vibrant, textural study by Elaine Turnbull is a compelling example of the artist’s “naive” expressive style. Through a process of layering and sgraffito—scratching back into the wet oil—Turnbull transforms a domestic scene into a celebration of colour and form. The work shares a distinct kinship with the still lifes of Mary Fedden; both artists favor a flattened perspective and a whimsical, almost totemic treatment of everyday objects like jugs and fruit.
Based in Cornwall, Turnbull’s work is deeply informed by the St Ives tradition. The inclusion of handwritten text across the canvas adds a narrative, folk-art quality reminiscent of Alfred Wallis, grounding the sophisticated palette of ochre and cerulean in a sense of direct, innocent observation. It is a work that prioritizes the “mood” of the objects over rigid realism, resulting in a composition that is both playful and structurally confident.
The painting is signed to the front and board, and retains a gallery label on the verso.
