Renato Bussi’s Two Sheep distils a pastoral moment into textured, luminous form. A standing and a reclining sheep are modelled in warm earthen hues over a red‑oxide ground, their volumes emerging through layered, tactile brushwork and soft scumbling. The abstracted trees and russet field hold the figures in a calm, balanced composition, where light and surface carry as much feeling as description.
Bussi worked throughout the mid–to–late 20th century, developing a painterly language rooted in Italian postwar figurative traditions. He favoured quiet, rural subjects and measured compositions, building atmosphere through restrained palettes—siennas, umbers, soft greens—and carefully worked surfaces. His oils emphasise mood, light, and texture over strict naturalism, giving familiar countryside motifs a poetic, enduring presence.
